The lithium-ion battery developed by Akira Yoshino, Emeritus Fellow of Asahi Kasei Corporation, is now an inseparable part of our daily lives, used in mobile devices such as cell phones, smartphones, and notebook computers, as well as in automobiles and for power storage. However, while it is now possible to store large amounts of electrical energy in terms of weight and volume, it is also true that it is accompanied by dangers such as ignition and explosion. Over the past few years, there have been airplane accidents, electric car fires, mobile devices, mobile charging batteries, and computers that have ignited. Batteries have become smaller and more convenient, but there is a dangerous aspect to today’s lithium-ion batteries. Moreover, if EVs continue to spread rapidly at this rate, lithium materials are expected to be depleted in less than 10 years. There is an urgent need to secure new materials to replace lithium and to build new energy storage systems. We are constantly working to improve lithium-ion batteries in order to pursue such battery safety, as well as research and development of completely different batteries and energy supply systems. As a solutions company in the energy field, we will continue to be a company trusted by our customers and society by offering our accumulated technology and know-how and by fulfilling our social responsibility with this technology. |
